The Office of the Church for the Laity of the Anglican Use

For those among the laity who wish to get into the habit of praying the morning and evening office as well as compline, an excellent resource is The Book of Hours. This contains the offices of  matins, evensong and compline of the Book of Divine Worship in the language of Rite 1.

The link to the Book of Hours is http://bookofhours.org/index.htm

The Catholic Church encourages the laity to participate in the Office of Hours. It is a wonderful way to pray in unity with the Holy Father, the Bishops, priests and religious of the Church.

You will find this office differs little from the form and content of the Book of Common Prayer Canada 1962. You may wish to adapt it for your own personal use to include the prayers for the Queen and the Royal Family.

Another Collect that you may wish to add is the Collect for the Pope.

Oh God, the shepherd and guide of all the faithful, look with favour upon Thy servant Pope Benedict XVI, whom Thou hast been pleased to place as pastor over Thy Church. Grant him, we beseech Thee, to help by word and example those over whom he rules, so that, together with the flock entrusted to him, he may reach everlasting life. We ask this through Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

Note: There has been a delay in the printing of the Customary of Our Lady of Walsingham which contains approved forms of morning and evening prayer as well as compline, Although designed for use by clergy and laity of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, it is perfectly acceptable for it to be used elsewhere. Once it it has been published, purchase information will be available.

Customary of Our Lady of Walsingham

This is a daily prayer book for the Ordinariate - those former Anglicans who have recently become a distinct part of the Roman Church. In creating the Ordinariate, Pope Benedict recognised the treasures that Anglicans brought with them from their own tradition and this book is replete with the riches of Anglican patrimony. It contains material from the Anglican tradition, adapted according to the Roman rite including: * an order for morning, evening and night prayer throughout the year * spiritual readings for the Christian year * the minor offices * calendar and lectionary tables For use throughout the English speaking world, this unique volume will fill an immediate need.
